Trading Standards issued a warning in August 2026 about criminals posing as network operators and exploiting interest in 5G upgrades. The typical script matches what happened to you almost word for word: a cold call claiming your SIM is "outdated" or can't handle 5G and must be replaced (usually "free of charge"), followed by an attempt to "start the order."
Their goal is a SIM swap (account takeover).They "start the order," generate a genuine one-time passcode (OTP) text to your phone from EE; ask you to give it and your email address. If you do, your phone number goes on their SIM card. They can then access your Bank Accounts!"
