You answer the phone and someone tells you they're from Microsoft, BT, or your internet provider. They say your computer has been compromised, your broadband is sending out errors, or your Windows licence is about to expire. They want you to let them connect to your computer so they can fix it. There is nothing wrong with your computer. They want your money, your passwords, or both.

Microsoft will never cold call you. Neither will BT's technical department or any other company ringing out of the blue about problems with your PC. These calls come from overseas call centres and they target people who aren't confident with technology. Our guides explain the different scripts these callers use, what happens if you let them connect, and how to report them.
